What does it
cost to build a power plant? Here are construction costs for
one megawatt of generated electricity:
·
Coal…………
$2.9 million
·
Nuclear……..
$3.75 million
·
Geothermal…
$6.2 million
·
Wind Farm…..
$6.75 million
·
Solar…………
$7.9 million
·
Wave…………
$8.2 million
The U.S. has peak production capacity of about 1,000 gigawatts
of electricity. A gigawatt
is 1,000 megawatts. These are
the construction costs; I have not found the cost of fuel per
megawatt for the various types and the fixed cost of
operation. For example,
we assume nuclear has the highest operation cost because of
security and redundancy in safety. We do not
want anything going wrong at a nuclear reactor! This list
shows why it is so important to envirornmentalists to get a cap
and trade tax program or some similar tax program to raise the
cost of burning coal, it is too cheap. Alternative energy
costs two to three times to build. Electric rates will
have to rise to cover these costs. This will impact each
of us at home, but also make our businesses
non-competative. A friend of mine told me two years ago
that China's advantages were cheap labor and cheap power.
They have no evironmental laws, the air is filthy, the rivers
are dirty, but they build gadgets to sell to us cheap.
They understand it is better to eat, than regulate business
until it leaves.
The London
Times had an article on OH! Bama and French
President Sarkozy. It seems
Sarkozy was not as impressed with OH! Bama as our press
is. His
office referred to OH! Bama’s efforts as unoriginal,
unsubstantial, and overrated. And I
thought it was just that they hated George Bush!
The Homeland Security office has sent a report to states
warning them about “right wing radicals”. They believe
these groups may “reject federal authority in favor of state or
local authority…..may oppose immigration.” Sign me
up. I am all for
federalism, it would be nice to turn Washington into a small
town of little consequence. This is what
the founders intended, a small federal government serving the
states, and protecting our freedoms. Thanks to
the Washington
Times for outing this report.
You can read the report; I have it on the web site under
diversions. It did not
qualify to be placed under investor resources, as it is a
joke. However,
when you are talking about the feds, nothing is a
joke.
I saw some interesting comments today. Last holiday
season was the slowest in four decades. China now
sells more cars than the U.S. Automobile
sales in the U.S. account for 20% of all retail
sales.
Just a word about Galt’s Long-Term Portfolio the price is going
up Friday. I know it
was supposed to go up on the 16th but I screwed up and did
not give you fair warning yesterday. Get in now
for only $49 per year, less than a dollar per
week.
You get a recommendation of a good stock with a set buy
price every two weeks. You
get a weekly recap with any information about your
holdings and the market in general, and daily monitoring
service. You
get an alert in case of adverse conditions and what
actions we should take. This
includes monitoring the stock prices for trailing stop
losses.
I received a question from Shane, “What is the difference
between the Long-Term Portfolio and
SwingTrader?
The Long-Term Portfolio is for everybody, you can
continue your work and we help you invest your funds to
grow your IRA, 401K or investment account for the
future. You
can take control of your investments, rather than buy
mutual funds and trust someone in New York to “try to
beat the indexes”. The
SwingTrader is a
little more intense. We
initiate two trades per week with the goal of averaging
10% on each trade in five weeks or less. Some
take longer, some take less, most make money. We
have an 85% win rate, 71 profitable closed out of 85
trades, in the last 8 months.
You should have long-term investments, and then take some of
your funds and trade for higher gains. This way you
are not playing with ‘scared money’. I do not
want you to use all of your investable funds for ‘trading’,
this is the fun money, and this is where we really juice your
income. Because of
the higher risk, there are sadly some losses that have to be
expected.
Write if you have questions to john@galtstock.com Sign up for the
service that fits your goals and temperament. Some are not
comfortable ‘trading’, it is not for
everybody.

The Boston Tea Party spread to over 400 cities

The White House is downplaying these as
malcontents. Do you think it will have any

“
Anyone may arrange his affairs so that his taxes shall be as
low as possible; he is not bound to choose that pattern which
best pays the Treasury. There is not even a patriotic duty to
increase one's taxes. Over and over again, the courts have said
that there is nothing sinister in so arranging affairs as to
keep taxes as low as possible. Everyone does it, rich and poor
alike, and all do right, for nobody owes any public duty to pay
more than the law demands." Judge
Learned Hand
